This year’s World’s Best Awards survey closed on March 2, just before widespread stay-at-home orders were implemented as a result of COVID-19. The results reflect our readers’ experiences before the pandemic, but we hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your trips to come — whenever they may be.

Travel + Leisure readers are some of the most seasoned explorers in the world, so it follows that their choices in hotels and resorts are a reflection of their breadth of knowledge and taste. In other words, this is a selective bunch. This year’s list of the top 100 hotels in the world span six continents and include everything from safari lodges in the Serengeti, and Indian palaces in Rajasthan to glittering high-rise retreats in London and Tokyo. What they all have in common is a commitment to excellent service, great locations, and amenities that stand out from the pack.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards surveyTravel + Leisure asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city or resort based on their locations and amenities.

Africa was well represented this year. No. 9 Singita Kruger National Park, which consists of two contemporary retreats, Sweni Lodge and Lebombo Lodge, is set amid 33,000 acres of South African wilderness. On the other end of the spectrum, No. 57 the Silo, in Cape Town, represents a sophisticated sense of city life, and is directly adjacent to Zeitz MOCAA — the Museum of Contemporary Art Africa.

Asia made a strong showing again this year, and Southeast Asia was particularly well represented. Indonesian properties in the top 100 included No. 4 Ritz-Carlton, Bali, and No. 23 Belmond Jimbaran Puri. In Thailand, No. 22 Anantara Chiang Mai Resort & Spa and No. 37 the Sukhothai Bangkok both had lots of fans.

Stateside, an eclectic mix of hotels made the list this year, from all corners of the country. Dude ranch and ski-oriented properties in mountain states were popular, such as Lodge & Spa at Brush Creek Ranch (No. 14) in Wyoming, C Lazy U Ranch (No. 48) and Sonnenalp Hotel (No. 57) in Colorado, and the Lodge at Blue Sky, Auberge Resorts Collection (No. 47) in Utah. City slickers, meanwhile, gave nods to spots like the Mark (No. 49) on New York City’s Upper East Side and the La Peer Hotel (No. 77) in West Hollywood.

But it was another of those enchanting Southeast Asian resorts that captured the coveted No. 1 spot this year. Read on to learn more about Capella Ubud and all the other top hotels in the world.
