The leaders of Mykonos Betsson BC, Mr. Alekos Angeletakis and Mr. Nikos Daktylidis, spoke to mykonosbc.gr about the club’s historic first season in Greece’s top basketball division, the standout moments, and what lies ahead.

Reaching the playoffs against Panathinaikos AKTOR and qualifying for the Cup Final Eight are historic milestones for Mykonos Betsson. Looking back on this journey, do you see it more as the validation of a long-term plan, or as an achievement that exceeded even your initial expectations?

Nikos Daktylidis:
“I think it’s both validation and an overachievement at the same time. For a team competing at this level for the first time, our original and primary goal was very clear: stay in the league and build solid foundations. Beyond that, we wanted to improve week by week and keep evolving through our work.

What we achieved this season is the result of everyone’s daily effort — the players, our coach Vangelis Ziagos and his staff, the management, and also the tremendous support and love the people of Mykonos have shown the team. I believe what we had in our minds and in our hearts has become reality. And that gives us even greater motivation moving forward.”

Alekos Angeletakis:
“From day one, we built this team with one main objective: to secure our place in the league. Competitively, I believe we performed very well, exceeded expectations, earned important victories, and showed great fighting spirit throughout the season.

I think we largely achieved the goals we had set for ourselves. As for exceeding expectations, I’d say we’ve already done that through our overall journey — finishing seventh, making the top eight, and qualifying for the playoffs proves it. From here on, we keep going. Step by step.”

What moment during this journey made you feel truly proud of what is being built in Mykonos?

Nikos Daktylidis:
“For me, the win against PAOK was one of the most important moments of the season. It was one of our best performances, against an opponent with enormous history and stature. That game showed our character, and I think it said a lot about who we are as a team, our mentality, and the way we want to compete at this level.”

Alekos Angeletakis:
“Nikos is right, and I agree with everything he said. But I think a truly historic moment for us was our first official home game on the island against Olympiacos, and the fact that we managed to have the arena ready in such a short time.

That’s something that really stays with me. It’s not just about the basketball side of things, but about creating the conditions for Mykonos to compete at this level overall. That’s the moment and achievement that stands out to me.

The love from the fans and the performances of our team showed that when you work hard and truly believe in something, anything is possible. You can achieve anything.”

What would you consider a successful continuation after this season?

Alekos Angeletakis:
“Every year, we’ll try to make the team better and continue building on what we’ve already achieved. From there, we’ll see where this season can take us. We may even find ourselves competing in Europe, but overall we want to move forward seriously, one step at a time, steadily raising our level.”

Nikos Daktylidis:
“Our goal is to establish ourselves consistently in the GBL, have competitive seasons, and continue improving as much as possible — always gradually and with the right steps.”
