A total of 5.4 million people took 9.6 million trips. ELSTAT’s travel survey shows growing demand for short 1–3 day getaways and a double-digit increase in travelers aged over 65.
The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) has released the results of its 2025 Survey on the Qualitative Characteristics of Domestic Tourists.
The survey highlights the following key findings:
A total of 5.4 million people of all ages took at least one trip for either personal or business reasons during 2025. Overall, 9.6 million trips were made, representing an increase of 7.2% in the number of travelers and 11.0% in the number of trips compared with 2024.
These trips accounted for 85.8 million overnight stays, while total travel expenditure reached €4.122 billion, up 5.5% and 11.3%, respectively, from the previous year.
Among people aged 15 and over, 4.6 million took at least one personal or business trip in 2025, an increase of 8.4% from 2024. They made 8.2 million trips, up 13.0% year on year.
These travelers recorded 74.3 million overnight stays and spent €3.861 billion, representing increases of 7.4% and 12.5%, respectively.
Of these trips:
- 97.0% were taken for personal reasons, including holidays, leisure, visiting friends and relatives, and other private purposes.
- 3.0% were business trips.
Leisure Travel Drove Growth
Compared with 2024, personal travel showed strong gains across all key indicators:
- The number of domestic tourists taking at least one trip increased by 8.7%.
- The number of trips rose 13.7%.
- Travel spending increased 13.3%.
- Overnight stays grew 7.4%.
Travelers Aged 65+ Posted the Strongest Growth
The largest increase in traveler numbers was recorded among people aged over 65, with the number of domestic tourists in this age group rising 24.0% compared with the previous year.
The same group also recorded:
- a 28.5% increase in trips,
- a 21.0% rise in travel spending,
- and a 12.1% increase in overnight stays.
Short Breaks Became More Popular
By trip duration, the strongest growth was seen in short trips lasting one to three nights.
Compared with 2024:
- the number of these trips increased 26.7%,
- spending rose 21.6%,
- and overnight stays climbed 27.8%.
Most Trips Were Made by Land
For personal travel:
- 5.3 million trips were made using land transport,
- 1.4 million by air,
- and 1.3 million by sea.
Land travel recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising 12.6% compared with the previous year.
Accommodation Choices
For personal trips:
- 52.1% used non-rented accommodation (such as staying with family or friends or at a second home), an increase of 13.1%. These trips accounted for 71.6% of all overnight stays.
- 47.9% used paid accommodation, with the number of such trips increasing 14.3% and their overnight stays rising 16.1%.
Trip Length and Daily Spending
The survey also found that:
- 40.7% of domestic leisure trips within Greece lasted 4–7 days, with an average daily expenditure of €76.70.
- 49.5% of leisure trips abroad lasted 4–7 days, with average daily spending of €152.70.
