Some plugins are excellent for playing rhythms, thanks to their pre-recorded loops and phrases.

In this article, I enlist and review the top 6 electric guitar instrument plugins for strumming and playing leads in Virtual guitar plugins have come a long way since the early years of the last decade. Furthermore, you can find guitar amp plugins like IK Multimedia Amplitube 5 and TH-U Overloud with uncanny realism on the market for a fraction of the price of similar hardware.

Ample Sound Guitar Stratocaster. Ample Sound Guitar Telecaster. MusicLab RealStrat 5. MusicLab RealRick 5. When selecting an electric guitar plugin, you have to know how you intend to use it.

Some plugins are excellent for playing rhythms, thanks to their pre-recorded loops and phrases. Conversely, some work better for playing leads because they have more articulations, dynamism, and general playability. And some might handle either equally. As a guitarist, I am pretty picky when it comes to selecting virtual guitar plugins.

So, my picks in this list include specialized rhythm guitars that are beginner-friendly and realistic, deeply sampled guitars with nearly every possible articulation and technique.

Iron 2 is a virtual guitarist best for playing rhythms for rock, metal, and similar genres. It features over sampled phrases in 30 styles played by a studio session guitarist. You can switch through patterns and chords using key switches. Similarly, you can also use Iron 2 as a playable instrument.

You can hold chords, strum or play individual strings, and play melodic riffs. It features several articulations for riff performance too. Key Features:. Iron 2 is available for Windows 7 or higher and macOS Ujam instruments provide excellent results with minimal effort.

I love how Iron 2 lets you play pre-recorded phrases as well as custom riffs and rhythms. The phrases are ideal for realistic rhythm parts, whereas creating new riffs works well to bring changes to your song. It makes adding a guitar track to your song even easier.

The Fender Stratocaster is one of the most notorious guitars ever designed. As good as the Stratocaster sounds, you might be looking for another instrument. The features of most of these plugins are the same as the ones I list below. So, you only need to find out which sound you prefer.

AGSC is one of the most detailed virtual electric guitars available today. So, whether you are looking to play rock riffs or clean trap melodies , you can use AGSC and get instant results. The Fender Telecaster was introduced in , taking the world by storm, and has remained in production even today.

Its sound comes from its iconic single-coil pickups , of which the bridge pickup is slanted. The slant gives a subtly brighter sound to the thinner strings while giving a mellower tone to the thicker ones. It has two sample libraries dedicated to the pickup positions : neck and bridge. It uses key switches to let you program the natural-sounding rhythm and lead parts.

AGTC accurately recreates the sound of the Fender Telecaster, and the realism of the engine is laudable. I love how the built-in amp simulations and the effect processors are high-quality, customizable, and genuinely useful for mixing. The plugin also features hundreds of presets that help you get started.

The variant in RealLPC has the newer two-pickup configuration and a warm, bell-like sound suitable for various genres, including rock, pop, blues, and jazz. It has a vast number of articulations, features, and customizability. For instance, you can select from three pickup configurations : neck, bridge, and both. If you choose both, you can adjust the level of each pickup.

Likewise, you can customize the velocity-dependent accent level and picking position. It also features double-tracking and baritone tuning perfect fourth lower. Overall, if you know how to play the guitar or wish to get the most amount of flexibility and realism , I would highly recommend MusicLab products. The plugin uses deep sampling with up to 30 round-robins to create uncanny realism. Similarly, the programming is astounding and produces smooth, realistic results, particularly in the Solo mode.

However, you do need dedicated amp simulation software for this plugin. It gets you started and helps you learn how best to expand your virtual gadgets in the future. MusicLab RealStrat 5 comes with two sample sets : standard and elite. The standard is the legacy version of this instrument plugin, fully backward compatible with previous versions.

And the elite is the newer version featuring three pickups : neck, mid, and bridge. Further, it features seven pickup combinations. Hence, it gives more sonic opportunities. RealStrat 5 features many guitar-specific techniques and articulations. It can detect thirty types of note piano chords , including sus2, sus4, add9, 6 th , 7 th , etc. Furthermore, you can play chords in four fret positions and even build custom chords from scratch.

On the main interface, you can customize the velocity-dependent accent level, pick position, etc. These features let you create and perform with unique guitar sounds that would otherwise be tedious to achieve. RealStrat 5 is available for Windows 7 or higher and macOS I like the sound of the Fender Stratocaster for playing rhythms. It cuts through the mix but avoids dominating vocals and other instruments.

So, I would recommend it for genres like trap and hip-hop alongside traditional genres like rock, pop, jazz, and blues. Of course, you can also use it for playing leads—after all, MusicLab electric guitars are uncannily realistic. RealRick 5 features two Rickenbacker electric guitars : a six-string and a twelve-string.

Furthermore, there are multiple variations of the guitars that provide even more sonic possibilities. The plugin provides high-quality samples with an engine that delivers incredible playability. Straightforward keyboard layout and detailed articulations make it possible for a keyboardist to perform like a veteran guitarist, whether rhythm or lead. The stereo and double-tracked patches sound excellent for playing rhythm.

RealRick 5 is available for Windows 7 or higher and macOS If you are a fan of the 60s rock and roll or the 80s indie-pop , RealRick 5 could become your go-to electric guitar. It is highly flexible, sounds realistic, and delivers the high-treble, jingle-jangle rhythm guitar sound instantly. The sounds are suitable for specific scoring styles, pop, trap, hip-hop, 80s rock, etc.

And the user interface is straightforward, with only two faders. Each instrument in the plugin has a specific ambiance or mood and exploiting it rewards you well. And in this case, I find the sounds usable for 80s style music, film scoring, or chill hip-hop tracks. Suburban Guitarist is an electric guitar synthesizer. Using automation on its parameters improves how convincing it sounds. Suburban Guitarist is available for Windows 7 or higher , bit only.

It comes in VST 2 format. If you require a basic rock guitar that can play some riffs and chords , Suburban Guitarist is a decent choice. Then, you can understand how guitarists hold chords and add a layer of realism. And finally, download free guitar amp simulators like LePou plugins to use with this guitar.

The plugin is capable of several playing techniques. It simulates a physically modeled guitar body, strings, and a plectrum to generate its sound. The plugin is available for Windows 7 or higher , both bit and bit. It is possible to make Revitar 2 sound slightly like a Stratocaster, especially when you add a guitar amp plugin.

However, it sounds more like a semi-acoustic and a rather synthetic one at that. So, I would only suggest it as a temporary placeholder before switching to a better instrument. Then again, it could be the perfect instrument for the people after an original sound! By now, we are familiar with the much admired, nearly seventy years old electric guitar.

Strategy features a sample set per pickup : neck, middle, and bridge. And it not only gives you the five positions available on the real guitar, but it lets you control the levels of the pickups separately. The library comes with several effect processors and guitar amp models too. So, you can get a complete guitar mix right from inside UVI Workstation without using dedicated software. The most significant advantage of Strategy over other similar instruments is that it features many effect processors and amp models for nearly the exact cost.

However, it does lack some of the more advanced features in the Solo mode, but it makes up for it with its competent Pattern mode. So, the decision ultimately relies on which Stratocaster sounds the best to you.

Luckily there are free options available that pack a punch. Today we take a look at some of the best free guitar VST plugins that will give you authentic, professional guitar sounds without you ever reaching for your wallet. Using guitar VST plugins is the most simple way of adding guitars into your tracks.

The depth, humanization, and real-life articulation of a guitar are often lost when sampled and played on a MIDI controller. My mission? To find the most realistic and best free guitar VSTs on the market. I was surprised by the number of quality freebies that I found. All guitar plugins on this list are powerful and versatile tools and can help you add realistic guitar riffs into your music productions.

It aims to bring a Martin D acoustic guitar sound to your studio and it does a pretty good job. You can switch between standard mode and keyboard mode which determines how many strings can be played at the same time. Standard mode will play like a guitar so if you try to play two notes on the same string, the plugin will only play the last note of the two.

With keyboard mode, all notes will be heard which can sound unrealistic. Another cool feature is the Tab mode that lets you import any guitar tabs, which you can download on a site like guitarprotabs. You can also tweak the guitar with a push of a button, adding more body or width to the sound. You can download the Ample Guitar M Lite here. The plugin lets you choose between three different guitar types: Acoustic, Nylon, and Steel.

I really like the Steel-mode for aggressive and fast riffs, while the nylon and acoustic samples are more chill and laidback. This guitar VST sounds very realistic and every note contains several layers of samples.

Depending on how hard you hit your key, different samples with different velocities will be triggered. While gently pressing down the key you hear a smooth guitar sound and if you press harder the guitar sound will be stronger with vibrato. The interface also features ADSR controls, a voice mode selector, and a reverb. Haunted Guitar Lite would be my go-to place. Rather than pure realistic sound, this VST is more aimed towards spooky, dark, and scary sounds.

If you want the kind of hissing background noise you hear in horror movies, you can create that with Haunted Guitar. You can download Haunted Guitar Lite here. The free version includes 7 presets with various effects and tone-shaping controls. You can change the attack, decay, sustain and release of any sample with the ADSR envelope generator. If you want to modulate the tone you can map the Mod-rate or Mod depth to any of the four predefined parameters.

The interface is user-friendly without a learning curve. If you want a simple yet beautiful nylon string fingerpicking sound, make sure to grab this freebie. Spicy Guitars differs from the other free guitar VSTs on this list. Think of it more as a synthesizer rather than a sampled guitar. One of the coolest things about Spicy Guitars is the chord detection system, which kicks in when you play three or more notes on your MIDI keyboard. The piano chords are automatically detected and converted into a full guitar chord that has this realistic strumming sound that you hear from a real acoustic guitar.

You can switch between 9 different guitars and 2 different string types. The user interface features multiple controls that let you tweak the sound in real-time.

When you switch on the sustain, the notes will last longer which is preferred when the chord detection system is turned off and you play arpeggios. You can also switch between legato and sustain, adjust palm mutes, harmonics, and vibrato.

The instrument is created using samples from a Fender Telecaster, fed through a 15w vintage tweed amp. Peel Guitar is extremely user-friendly with a simple three control interface. The sound design and customization capabilities are rather limited, although you can do some customization with the volume, velocity, reverb, and tightness controls.

Think of it as a tweaked-out sound ready to go, offering a classic fender sound straight out of the box. You can get some interesting drone sounds by hitting the low keys. Choose between three predefined presets that have been tweaked differently. This free virtual instrument offers a clean tone, suitable for jazz and blues music.

The user interface is simple with ADSR, volume, and pan controls. The texture of the low notes in particular is great. The high notes feel a bit plonky and piano-like but I managed to give them more depth with some additional external effects.

Cute Emily Guitar combined with a guitar amp simulator completely skyrockets the value of this free VST. It just brings the dry signal to life and makes the instrument more playable. Overall, I feel like this guitar plugin can add a lot of value to your production if you have some additional tools at your disposal. You can download Cute Emily Guitar here. Shreddage 3 Stratus Free by Impact Soundworks is built upon ultra-realistic sounds from a sampled Fender Stratocaster.

There are tons of options available in the UI and a lot of different parameters you can tweak. Thanks to its distorted sound, Shreddage 3 is best suited when producing rock music. Every fret has deep sampling, meaning that every note you play consists of up to 24 dynamic layers of samples. The tone-shaping capabilities let you customize the sound as you like, and you can switch between different Picking Modes and Fretting Modes.

You can even deemphasize the picking sound while playing arpeggios or sweeps, to make it even more realistic. Shreddage 3 Stratus is one of the best and most versatile guitar VSTs on the market. You can download Shreddage 3 Stratus Free here. There are no compromises in sound quality, just fewer options of cabinets and pedals.

The free version includes a British-style tube preamp and 13 modular components. The user interface is simple and you add new effects to the effect chain with seamless drag and drop. Guitar Rig Player 6 is a great option for beginners exploring the world of amp simulators and digital guitar effects.

However, I found the selection of presets rather limited compared to other free guitar amp VST plugins. Amplitube is one of the most popular software for recording guitar and bass. Then you can solely buy that amp without having to purchase the entire bundle of effects. This guitar VST comes with 4 amps for guitars and 1 amp for bass, with matching cabinets and microphone combinations. Guitar amp VSTs can have a steep learning curve for beginners, having to scratch their heads to be able to dial in the desired tone.

However, all amps and effects featured in Amplitube 5 CS are super user-friendly and a great starting point for customization. You can download Amplitube 5 CS here. Compared to Amplitube 5 CS and Guitar Rig 6 player, this plugin is more focused on metal guitar sounds rather than pure rock.

The user interface is not overly complicated and it features basic controls such as Gain, Low, Mid High, Presence, and Volume. Another cool feature is the built-in impulse response loader.

This means that you can upload your impulse responses from other recordings and retain your preferred tone down to the details. Pretty dope for a free guitar VST amp simulator if you ask me!

You can download Amped Roots Free here. A plugin is a separate piece of software that allows you to access different effects and sounds. A guitar VST is specifically designed to emulate guitar sounds without having to use a guitar or amplifier.

There are two kinds of guitar VST plugins:. There are four types of plugin formats and depending on what DAW you use, you should choose one over the other.

The available formats are:. When downloading free guitar VSTs, they will usually download in multiple formats for you to choose from. Plugins also come in different bit rates: bit or bit. They should rather be used for arrangement and building up your tracks. This issue has been solved by Spicy Guitars chord detection system, which converts piano chords to guitar chords. A lot of the realistic-sounding guitar parts contain a lot of MIDI changes, such as changing articulations and adding variety to things like velocity, vibrato, and anything else.

Vibrato is important when it comes to adding organic variations to the guitar sound. Also, some notes will have less sustain, and some will ring out a bit more, depending on how hard you press the string against the fretboard. Discreet automation on the release envelope will make the notes less mechanical. Even the smallest adjustments may have a significant impact. Anything that appears too mechanical will give it away. There are a couple of ways to use guitar plugins. The first one is having them hosted in your DAW, and the second option is to have them as standalone plugins.

VST effects such as guitar amp simulators are loaded into an audio track and process the audio input. Some plugins can only be loaded into your DAW, and some can act as standalone programs. Standalone plugins come in handy if you want to jam or try different guitar effects in your amp simulator. Just plug your guitar into your audio interface, open up your guitar amp simulator and start playing. Amplitube 5 CS is in my opinion the best free standalone guitar amp simulator available today!

It’s got loads of excellent presets, nearly infinite depth and works equally well on guitar, synths, or vocals. It doesn’t require complex post-EQ to bed into a mix, and it’s so inspiring that often throwing it on a part and clicking through a few presets is enough to totally change the vibe of a track. They come with no restrictions, no complicated unlock process and sound excellent out of the box.

In addition to the amp, you get a few IRs and effects as well. Besides the fact that the core sounds are solid and react to your playing in an amp-like way, you can throw a distortion in front and it’s convincing enough to make you ditch your amp — at least for higher-gain sounds. As a guitarist, the most interesting plugins model amps and pedals. These plugins look familiar, feel familiar, and are designed to work well with our chosen instrument.

Much of what makes a plugin work well straight out the box lies in its EQ profile. Guitars tend to center around the notes E and D, and their overtones. Not only is the guitar primarily a midrange instrument, but when it comes to the bass frequencies, the crossover into sub-bass happens part way through the scale, rather than bottoming out more cleanly around the lowest note.

Luckily, although note choice isn’t easy to change, the tools you’re using to mix are. As any bedroom or professional producer knows, making the guitar sound good on record is the work of more than just amp sims. Crucial ingredients include compression, and that most misunderstood tool, EQ. While most DAWs ship with a decent compressor, not all ship with an EQ that works well for mixing and mastering.

More interesting than simple utilities are effects — and here there are lots of decent free options available. Especially once you’re comfortable with the ins and outs of EQ, effects plugins that are designed for either synths or vocals are easy to use on guitar. Many need the same low-cut that you will probably be applying anyway, and stereo or modulation effects can breathe life into an otherwise static mix.

As an added bonus, most in-the-box modulation effects also are less likely to have phase issues than their real-world counterparts. The Supermassive is the best free plugin available on the internet. In addition to the normal delay controls you’d expect, like feedback, mix and delay time, there’s a simple but effective post EQ block.

That’s not where the magic lies, however. It’s got three additional controls — stereo width, warp, and a modulation block, that depending on context and preset, can totally change the character of the delay. Although it’s a delay, the range of its controls takes it from reverb all the way into modern space cadet territory — think rack Lexicon or Eventide.

It has swells, patterns, strange reflections and pitch-shifts, among many other sounds that the creators probably didn’t envisage it making. Flicking through the presets always proves inspiring, and the best thing is that it can even be tamed down to a more straightforward delay. Though, why would you want to do that? The Amped series from ML Sound Lab is heavy-duty enough to go toe to toe with the Axe-Fx and Kempers of this world, so it’s perhaps surprising that the company has decided to give away any of their models for free.

Either way, as part of a marketing tie-in with YouTube tone hound Ryan ‘Fluff’ Bruce, one of his signature amps, an EVH emulation, is available for nothing.

In terms of sound quality, it’s easily as good as anything in the BIAS Amp arsenal, and takes very little dialing in to sound good. It ships with a decent IR and a chain of optional pedals, including a noise gate. However, generally we had the best results while using the included noise gate and an external drive, such as the Mercuriall TSC which you can read about below. As well as the Roots, there’s also a free Stevie T collaboration, the Djentgod, which also sounds pretty good out of the box.

Especially for, well, ‘djent’ sounds, the ‘thall’ preset sort of does what it says on the tin, for very little effort. One of the cardinal sins of bad mixing is a boring stereo picture.

However, it’s understandable why many choose not to experiment with their stereo placement — it’s easy to cause phase issues when placing tracks. Moreover, some classic tricks like using a short delay line to increase stereo spread can store up problems for the mono mix. Luckily, Wider is designed expressly to not introduce phase issues when summed to mono, and allows you to push a mono sound source beyond the normal stereo field. The effect is hard to describe, but when working with more impressionistic genres, being able to place wet guitar parts wide in stereo space frees up the center of the mix for leads, vocals, and bass.

Logic Pro gives you a massive collection of plug-ins and sounds to fuel your creativity. Create professional spatial audio mixes using enhanced surround plug-ins that add depth and movement to your tracks.

Create amazing sounds using authentic re-creations of vintage equipment, powerful modern synthesizers, and complex multisampled instruments. The new single-window design makes it easier to create and edit sampler instruments while remaining backward compatible with all EXS24 files.

An expanded synthesis section with sound-shaping controls brings more depth and dynamics to your instruments — it features twin filters with parallel and serial routings, and five filters modeled after both analog and modern synths. An extendable modulation section allows you to add more sources and destinations as needed.

And the reimagined mapping editor adds powerful, time-saving features that speed the creation of complex instruments — including editing commands for automatic mapping, automatic loop finding, and analyzing and splitting samples into zones.

And save hours of tedious editing with new drag-and-drop hot zones. Quick Sampler is a fast and easy way to work with a single sample. Or record audio directly into Quick Sampler using a turntable, microphone, musical instrument, or even channel strips playing in Logic Pro.

In a few steps, you can transform an individual sample into a fully playable instrument. With Flex Time, you can keep your sample playing at the same speed no matter which notes you play. And with Slice Mode, you can split a single sample into multiple slices — perfect for chopping up vocals or breaking up and resequencing drum loops. Adjust loop start, end, and crossfade right on the waveform with easy-to-use markers. Use the auto-loop command to quickly create seamlessly looped samples. Slice drum loops and vocal phrases into a bank of samples, then play them from any keyboard or drum pad.

Record a sample using an external source like a mic or instrument. Auto Sampler lets you save hours by easily creating fully playable sampler instruments from hardware instruments, other software instruments, and effect plug-ins. This powerful but easy-to-use plug-in creates synthesized drum sounds. Choose from a diverse collection of drum models and shape their sound with up to eight simple controls.

Drum Synth is also directly integrated into the bottom of the Drum Machine Designer interface — giving you a focused set of sound-shaping controls.

Redesigned to be more intuitive and integrated, Drum Machine Designer lets you effortlessly build electronic drum kits. Apply individual effects and plug-ins on each discrete drum pad to experiment with sound design and beat-making in new ways. Each pad normally plays a single note, but if you open the track stack and select any subtrack, you can play all of the pitches of a single sound to create bass lines or melodic parts. You can also create a unique layered sound by assigning the same trigger note to two different pads.

Open Drum Kit Designer and select a kit. You can swap pieces to build a custom kit, choosing from a diverse variety of snares, kicks, toms, hi-hats, and cymbals. Finesse the sound of each drum by adjusting the tuning, dampening, and gain. And enable stereo or mono room and overhead mics. Each kit comes with its own unique mix designed by an industry hitmaker.

Choose a more elaborate Producer Kit and it loads with a Patch that gives you access to the full multichannel mix, along with all the processing and routing the producer used.

Once you see how the pros get their signature sounds, you can go with their techniques — or tweak away. Watch the drum kit designer demo. And the vast number of filters, modulation routes, arpeggiation options, and effects makes for limitless possibilities. Short Plucky Synth uses the Transform Pad to instantly jump or slowly morph between variations of the original sound. Luscious Arp Layers uses multiple arpeggiators on different virtual analog sources within a single instrument to produce complex musical patterns.

This clip features Brassy Jazz Ensemble, a stack of additive synth brass mixed with sampled analog synth strings. Multiple arpeggiators drive a variety of sample sounds and synthesis techniques, including virtual analog and additive, via modulation.

These two realistic plug-in instruments feature sophisticated articulation controls. They allow for the nuanced gestures a human performer would make when playing solo or ensemble string and brass instruments. A versatile synthesizer that delivers sounds ranging from classic analog to modern digital. The synthesis engine features three analog-modeled and wavetable oscillators, as well as dual multimode analog resonant filters and extensive modulation options.

Go for analog tones like earthshaking bass, textures, screaming leads, sweeping pads, and sawtooth waves. Or use distinctive digital sounds like bells, plucky bass, and brash leads. Play authentically re-created models of the Hammond B3 organ, the Mellotron, the Hohner Clavinet D6, and the Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and Hohner electric pianos — with all the character and quirks of the originals.

The Arpeggiator transforms simple chords into elaborate performances. Go with professionally designed presets, or shape the evolving performance by adjusting the rate, note order, and octave range of the notes.

And add swing to help the Arpeggiator groove with the feel of your song. Scale velocity, generate a rapid-fire series of notes, transpose incoming notes or conform them to a scale, and more. Watch the arpeggiator demo. Sculpture is a unique physical modeling instrument that produces tones no other synthesizer can. By re-creating the sound of vibrating materials like wood, glass, nylon, or metal, it generates uncommon and creative variations of strings, bells, chimes, and other instruments.

It features 14 different models with tempo-synced parameters, up to seconds of decay, and a colorful visual spectrum that provides meaningful feedback so you can see how reverb complements your tracks.

The Vintage EQ collection brings authentic re-creations of three of the most revered analog hardware EQs, with support for mono and stereo and control over analog saturation and heat. Add rhythmic movement to any track by arranging filters, effects, and independent step sequencers to create and control a wide range of treatments over time. Choose from all your favorite choruses, flangers, tremolos, and other must-have modulation boxes. Or turn up the funk with vintage and modern wahs or an octaver.

The Pedalboard interface makes it easy to reorder and swap your pedals and to creatively route your signal for thousands of combinations and virtually unlimited sounds. Lay down an amazing bass track with dead-on models of three vintage and modern bass amps and cabinets.

To get the perfect tone, switch between two types of input channels. Swap out cabinets and amps. Position one of three mics on different speaker cones.

Most guitar plugins automatically find the folder that your DAW scans for plugins. Your DAW will add that plugin to your library and you can load the plugin to a track. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

The signal chain is designed in a top-down fashion users of Reason will relate and all the rack units can be dragged and dropped onto the patch. The ability to split the signal via the handy split modules is also much welcome.

Benjamin Arango staff Editor.

It’s the sort of plugin that, once you have it, it will crop up on every song you make from then on. Though it’s based on the legendary chorus in the Roland Juno 60 synthesizer, the Magic Switch isn’t a straight-up clone.

It’s a little darker, a little more characterful, and it also sounds fantastic on guitar. It’s got a wide, lush stereo image, and is fantastic for adding some movement to a rhythm part that needs to elevate a track. With only two controls, a mix and a bypass button, it also forces you to use your ears as you dial it in. You’ll be amazed by just how much you can get out of it. However, look a little closer, and you’ll find that every band has a dynamics section that allows for a variety of gain manipulation techniques, beyond simple level control.

This includes frequency selective compression, wide-band compression and multi-band compression. These are all incredibly useful when bussing up and gluing together guitars in the mix, especially for taming bass-heavy chugs.

When bedding tracks into a mix, most audio sources benefit from a little extra saturation, and the guitar is no different. This excellent utility plugin from Softube is a straightforward way of dialing in a little extra saturation on your tracks without being overwhelmed by additional controls, or the urge to overdo it. Crucially, it stacks well with other saturation tools, meaning it plays nice not only with amp sims, but also emulated stompboxes and other gain plugins.

While the Supermassive is definitely the biggest inducer of ‘how is this free? The Space Modulator is a simple flanger with great presets — three of which will probably see the most use. There’s through zero, barber pole also known as ‘infinite’ and doubling. By messing with the feedback and rate, it’s possible to get strange slapback echoes and hard-to-describe psychedelic artifacts that warp the guitar signal almost beyond recognition.

Crazily, this isn’t even the final free plugin that Valhalla offer — they also give away the Freq Echo, which is essentially the front plate of a Roland Space Echo with some additional features.

It’s a dub monster, as well as being ace for generating vintage and psych echo tones on guitar tracks. Although some DAWs like Logic ship with a fully featured guitar pedalboard , you might find yourself needing to push a track a little harder, or indeed smash the front-end of an amp sim into saturation.

For that, you’ll need some kind of saturator. A DAW’s utility gain plugin will often suffice, as will a saturator. That said, level gain is easier when the tool is EQ’d with guitar use in mind, and that’s where the Mercuriall plugins come in. Generally, the TSC gets the most use, adding light saturation to guitar parts, and being used as a clean boost as part of longer chains — especially into emulated amps.

It can be used to downsample, distort, and crush any input signal, often well beyond recognition, and it’s amazing for creative sound design, whether it’s a downsampled sweep just before a breakdown, or mangling the guitar to sound like a synth for a chiptune outro.

The IRs and responses may not quite keep up with some of the heaviest-hitting emulations on the market today, but it’s doubtful any listeners will notice the difference once they’re sitting in a mix. Besides reviewing countless pedals for Total Guitar, he’s written guides on how to build your first pedal, how to build a tube amp from a kit, and briefly went viral when he released a glitch delay pedal, the Atom Smasher.

Hence, it gives more sonic opportunities. RealStrat 5 features many guitar-specific techniques and articulations.

The stereo and double-tracked patches sound excellent for playing rhythm.

Choosing an electric guitar plugin, like choosing a real guitar, is a confusing process.
